Mental Health Awareness Month: Let’s Talk About It

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, but for many people, mental health isn’t something that shows up just once a year. It’s part of everyday life. It’s the quiet stress you carry, the moments you feel overwhelmed, the days when your energy just isn’t there.

And sometimes, it’s hard to talk about.

We’re often told to keep going. To stay busy. To push through. From the outside, it can look like everything is fine, even when it doesn’t feel that way on the inside.

The truth is, many people are navigating more than they let on.

When we talk about mental health, we’re also talking about behavioral health. Behavioral health includes our mental and emotional well-being, along with how we cope, respond to stress, and move through daily life.

It doesn’t always look like a crisis. Sometimes it looks like feeling disconnected, struggling to focus, cancelling plans because you don’t have the energy, or knowing you need a break but not taking one.

These experiences are more common than we think. And they deserve to be acknowledged.

This month is a reminder that you don’t have to carry everything on your own. Talking about behavioral health, even in small ways, can make a difference. It might look like checking in with someone, being honest about how you’re feeling, or simply giving yourself permission to slow down.

There is no one right way to take care of your behavioral health. Some days it might mean resting. Other days it might mean reaching out. What matters is paying attention to what you need and responding to it.

If you’re ready to take a step toward support, Sacramento County’s Behavioral Health Services Screening and Coordination (BHS-SAC) can help connect you to resources at 916-875-1055. If you need support right away, you can call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t have to handle everything at once. Starting the conversation, even quietly, is a step forward.
