May was Mental Health Awareness Month, bringing national attention to our mental health’s critical role in our overall health. All across the country, there were marches, festivals, conferences, and more to shine a light on how anyone can overcome a mental illness through a community of support by friends, family, and medical professionals.
At Stop Stigma Sacramento, we honored the month by connecting with the Sacramento community through a series of pop-up events sharing local resources and celebrating the power of community. Members of our Speakers Bureau attended these events, offering their lived experiences and listening to yours. Here’s a look at what we learned and experienced together.
NAMI Walks
We kicked off the month at the annual NAMIWalks event hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Sacramento. Whether living with a mental illness or supporting someone who is, we all walk a shared path, and this event was a powerful reminder of the strength in unity and community.
Speakers Bureau member Diane Mintz spoke about her journey with mental illness and providing others with hope during the opening ceremony.
Mental Health Matters Day
On May 14th, we joined Mental Health America for their annual Mental Health Matters Day on the State Capitol lawn. The day featured personal stories, community participation, and a strong show of public-private partnership, all underscoring the importance of making mental well-being a top priority for everyone.

Farmers Markets
When we think about our overall health, mental health plays a critical role but it’s just one piece of the puzzle. That’s why we also showed up at local farmers markets throughout the month; spaces that nourish both body and mind. We engaged with community members, shared resources, and emphasized the connection between mental health, healthy eating, and staying active.
After an inspiring month of connection, storytelling, and support, we’re excited to keep the momentum going. At Stop Stigma Sacramento, we offer year-round resources and opportunities to get involved. Whether you’re interested in joining our Speakers Bureau, attending a future event, or simply learning more about mental health, we’re here for you.
